Athens Marathon. The Authentic is the only marathon in the world that follows the original historic route of the marathon legend, and is widely regarded as the spiritual birthplace of marathon running. The race starts in the town of Marathon and finishes at the Panathenaic Stadium in central Athens, recreating the legendary run of Pheidippides in 490 BC. Athens, the cradle of Western civilization, is home to the Acropolis of Athens, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987. The Panathenaic Stadium, the marathon’s finish venue, is the world’s only stadium built entirely of marble and served as the main stadium of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Athens Marathon.
