Maratona di Ravenna Città d’Arte is held in the historic city of Ravenna, renowned for its exceptional early Christian and Byzantine heritage. The city is home to eight monuments inscribed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites, making it one of the most significant centers of early Christian art in Europe. Ravenna served as the capital of the Western Roman Empire in its final years and later became a major political and religious center of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire in the West. Its mosaics are widely regarded as some of the finest and best-preserved examples of early Christian art in the world. The marathon course runs through Ravenna’s historic center, passing landmarks such as the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, and the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare, allowing runners to experience centuries of religious art and urban history while racing.
